Choosing the Right Mobility Walkers

There are 3 types of mobility walkers on the market, so let's review each type - with the pros and cons of each one.

standard walkersStandard Mobility Walkers

Standard Mobility Walkers are also called medical walkers. This is the type of aluminum walker that has no wheels. Just rubber tips at the bottom of each of the four legs.

They're lightweight, economical and they will give you the most support of all the types of walkers on the market.

You'll want to know that these are really best used indoors. They're great to help you move around the house and switch from one chair to another.

But since it has to be lifted at each step, using one can be slow moving. And lifting it up over & over can be tiring too. But to get the most balance support, for indoor use, they make a very good choice.

I also want to mention that they easily adjust to your height and they quickly fold up so you can store it or put it in your car trunk.

Rolling Mobility Walkers are built like a standard walker - except  there are wheels on the front two legs.   They're designed for anyone who can support more of their body weight in their legs. Yes, you'll get support with a rolling walker, but not as much support as with a standard model.

One of the nice things about the rolling models is that, because it has wheels, you don't have to lift it up with each step, so you'll move faster & more freely.

They work well on carpet too.  You'll see that many of them have glides on the two back legs for smoother movement.  They also adjust to your individual height and most of them fold up at the touch of a button.

This is a Rollator

Rollators can have 3 or 4 legs, with wheels on each  leg. Rollators are the fastest movers and they're really easy to push in front of you.

And for safety, the handles have brakes that let you slow down or stop.

Rollators are really great for indoors or outdoors - and if you're an active person, it might be the best choice for you. They can help you walk greater distances.

And the models with the built in seats are really handy if you need to take occasional breaks and sit down!

The new rollators on the market come in some cool colors & designs and they also fold up so you can put them in your car trunk.

I should mention that the 3 legged rollators have a slimmer & lighter design and they're a good choice if you need to walk in tight spaces like hallways, offices, etc.

I should also mention to you that many of us like to have a standard walker for around the house – and a rollator for outdoors or travel.

Contoured Grip

And one more thing that I think is really important is to look at the hand grips of any model you're thinking about buying. A good grip or handle can make all the difference! You'll want to make sure the grip or handle is contoured, or ergonomically designed, to be comfortable in your hand. The more comfortable the hand grip, the more enjoyable it will be to use - and less tiring too!

Personally, I have some peripheral neuthropy (numbness/tingling) in my hands, so I always need a grip that contoured & cushioned. A contoured or ergonomic grip makes a big  difference!
