There are hundreds of metal walkers & rollators on the market. And they come in many sizes and shapes. I’ll help you sort them out to find the perfect one for you. Or your loved one.
Here are three main types of metal walkers & rollators and I've listed their advantages & disadvantages so you can choose between a walker or a rollator!
Standard Walkers - are also known as medical walkers. They are four legged metal walkers with no wheels. They have rubber tips at the end of each leg. And they adjust to your individual height. Almost all of these are made of aluminum. These medical walkers are most commonly given out in hospitals and nursing homes because they are lightweight, inexpensive and give the most support of all the types of walkers & rollators.
Standard walkers are best suited for indoor use. And they’re a great help if you have to move from one chair to another. But, they also have to be lifted at each step, which can be tiring, slow or very cumbersome, after a while. Most standard walkers fold which makes them easy to transport them in a car – or tuck away for storage.
My Top Recommendation for a Standard Walker:
I highly recommend the Drive Medical Deluxe Folding Designer Walker on Amazon as the best standard walker (no wheels) because it's lightweight, strong and stylish!

It's super easy to fold/unfold and it's made of anodized aluminum for safety and strength - but's it's still lightweight. And it adjusts to your own height.
I have this EZ2Care Deluxe Folding walker from Amazon and I can tell you that the contoured hand grips are very soft and comfortable! Comfortable grips are important for everyone, but especially for those of use with arthritis, joint pain/stiffness or nerve damage.

My Favorite & Highly Recommended Three Wheel Rollator:
This Drive Medical Winnie Lite Rollator has three wheels & a light weight that makes it perfect for travel, shopping, maneuvering tight spaces - and it's a perfect fit for your car trunk too! It really allows you to walk through tight spaces and needs less "parking space" inside offices, restaurants, movies, stores, etc.
It has 7.5" casters with soft-grip tires that you can use indoors or outdoors. It quickly adjusts to your proper height and it easily folds up just using one hand. Very cool. The aluminum frame is strong, sturdy & light.
I love that this Drive Medical Winnie Lite Rollator on Amazon comes with a handsome plaid pouch for your personal items - and I want to mention that the pouch has a cover. I like the fact that you can put items in your pouch but the pouch cover ensures your privacy.

Rolling Walkers – are just like a standard walker but with front wheels added. Usually on the front. They’re ideal for someone who can support more of their body weight in their legs. A rolling walker is still somewhat supportive but they allow you to move faster and more freely than a standard model. You won’t have to lift up the walker with each step – so you’ll make faster progress.
Rolling walkers work well on carpet. Many of these are outfitted with glides on the two back legs. You'll see that they adjust to your individual height and most of them fold at the touch of a button.
Rollators: these are similar to metal walkers but they have wheels at the bottom of each leg. You‘ll see 3 and 4 wheeled rollators on the market. With a rollator, you’ll be able to walk fast and easily. They’re so easy to push in front of you!
But they do have brakes to provide stability and safety. Using the brakes, you can slow down or stop. They easily adjust to suit your height and they can fold up for travel or storage.
If you’re really active, or want to be, a rollator may be a great choice for you. The three wheel rollators are great to use if need to walk in tight spaces. And the fold-up seats that are available on some rollators are very handy to have for a quick rest. They’re great for indoor & outdoor use and they will help you walk greater distances on your own. And rollators come in some great new designs & colors that are very attractive!
I should also mention to you that many of us like to have a standard walker for around the house – and a rollator for outdoors or travel.
And one more thing that I think is really important is to look at the hand grips of any model you're thinking about buying. A good grip or handle can make all the difference! You'll want to make sure the grip or handle is contoured, or ergonomically designed, to be comfortable in your hand. The more comfortable the hand grip, the more enjoyable it will be to use - and less tiring too!
Personally, I have some peripheral neuthropy (numbness/tingling) in my hands, so I always need a grip that contoured & cushioned. A contoured or ergonomic grip makes a big difference!
