I wrote this lighted walking cane review page to help you find the best mobility aid for you. Or your loved one. And I share my advice on measuring, at the bottom of this page, to make sure your cane is the proper & safe height, so you can prevent falls and injury.
A lighted walking cane is a great choice if you need a little help with balance, or light support, when you're walking. It'll help you balance and also provide light so you can clearly see the path ahead of you.
Yes, canes with flash lights are helpful at night - but they are also a huge help in the daytime too! You may have noticed that steps tend to be dimly lit - which can be tricky. And if you're walking on thick carpet or on an uneven outdoor path, the extra light makes walking much safer. And it will make getting in and out of the car much easier too!
When you compare lighted walking canes, you'll want to decide if you want an adjustable or non-adjustable model.
Adjustable canes are the easiest to buy & use because they easily adjust to your own proper cane height.
Non-adjustable canes must be either sized for you by the manufacturer or you must size it yourself, when you get it home. To resize your lighted cane, you'll need to take the tip off, cut/saw the extra length off the shaft, then put the tip back on.
Also, you might want to think about whether you'd like a folding or non-folding lighted walking cane. Folding canes are great if you travel a lot. They easily fold up into your suitcase or travel bag. But if you consistently need a cane, and would not feel comfortable without it at your side, a non-folding cane is probably your best choice.
Also, do you want this cane for it's ability to safely light you way, or do you also want it for self-protection? There are some new lighted canes available that are outfitted with a small stun gun to ward off dangers! Like animals or thieves.

No matter what cane you decide on, just remember that it's very important to make sure your cane is the proper height. If you cane is too tall or too short, you'll increase your risk of falling or injuring yourself.
Here's an easy way to measure:
Stand up in a relaxed but straight position. Wear the normal walking shoes that you wear everyday. Hang your arms at your side.
You'll see a crease/wrinkle where your hand meets your arm, right above your thumb - and that's where your proper cane height is. Here's my photo to show you:
Have someone measure from the floor up to the crease/wrinkle in your wrist. It's important to have someone else measure so that you'll be able to keep your wrist still.
The top of your cane should be the same height as the point on your wrist where you hand meets your arm. And you can round up to the nearest half inch if you have to.
And don't forget that if you have a disability, injury, or have had recent surgery, you doctor or physical therapist can recommend a special walking pattern for you, cane style or answer any other questions.
Where can you use a lighted walking cane? Everywhere! Once you have a lighted walking cane you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. And here are a few uses for walking canes with lights that you may not have thought of:
