How to Choose a Bariatric Rollator

Let’s talk about how to choose a bariatric rollator that’s right for you. I’ll talk about the features you should look for and I’ll review some of the best bariatric rollators on the market.

And you can see my top bariatric rollator recommendation: the Medline bariatric rollator on Amazon.

If you’re a larger person, the right bariatric rollator can give you more mobility and freedom. Although it looks just like a standard four wheel rollator, a heavy duty bariatric rollator is specially designed with larger overall dimensions and special reinforcements that will support more body weight. And they’re also designed with wider distances between the handles, which gives you more room to be comfortable.

The Medline Bariatric Rollator on Amazon is my personal choice for the best heavy duty rollator on the market! As soon as you get it out of the box, you'll feel the quality construction that will give you the stability & security you're looking for.

I wanted to mention that the Medline Bariatric Rollator is very  easy to assemble! It shouldn't take you more than 10-15 minutes to get it ready for you to use. That's important to mention, because I'm like you if you get quickly frustrated, or tired, if something is difficult to assemble.

As you can see, this is also  a very stylish rollator - but it easily accommodates up to a maximum of 400 lbs! The red color is very handsome and the overall design is sleek - not medical or fussy. And it easily folds up too. And I should mention that it only weighs 19 lbs. You can read other customer reviews of the Medline Bariatric Rollator at

This Medline bariatric rollator has the wider design  you're looking for and a very comfortable 17.5" x 14" padded seat. The nice-sized basket fits right under the seat.

As you’re learning how to choose a bariatric rollator, remember that you’ll be able to walk faster than if you use a standard walker. A standard walker has no wheels and it needs to be lifted with each step, as you move forward.  But a rollator has wheels on each leg – and it has a hand brakes on the handles to allow you to slow or stop. The hand brakes are really handy for walking outdoors, especially on slopes or hills.

And keep these bariatric rollator buying tips in mind when you’re shopping around and comparing models:

Many styles are also built with fold-down seats that are simply great for allowing you to take a rest when you need it.  Bariatric rollators have wide seats, for comfort, and these built-in seats are incredibly handy when you’re outdoors during and having an active day.

And I really like that, on most models, the hand brakes can be locked, to keep your rollator from moving. The lock on the hand brakes on bariatric rollators is an important safety feature I recommend.

Here’s an important tip I wanted to share: always double check the maximum weight guidelines of any heavy duty rollator you're considering and match it up with your own weight! This will give you a safer & more comfortable walking experience. And the right model will greatly reduce your risk of falling.

And I want to mention that it can be incredibly helpful to choose a folding bariatric rollator. The models that fold up are easy to put into car trunks, store, or just tuck out of the way if you're in a public place.

Back in the day, rolling walkers used to have hard metal or plastic wheels & tires. Truthfully, they were hard to push, especially over carpet. But many of the newer models have rubber tires, which I highly recommend. Rubber tires really grip surfaces, in both indoor and outdoor settings, and they are very smooth on carpet too.

Don’t forget to check out the built-in seat. Personally speaking, I recommend choosing a padded seat versus a plastic, molded seat. A padded seat is just so much more comfortable.
