When choosing between a quad cane vs standard cane, you need to consider the amount of support you really need:

If you need only need slight balance help or light support, when you're walking, a standard cane is the type you should consider. A standard cane has a single tip and they’re outfitted with several handle styles, like a round, derby or offset handle. And they can be quite stylish.

And you can see my #1 top pick for the best all-around adjustable cane: the stylish Hugo Derby cane on Amazon. It's streamlined, comes in 5 colors and the grip is incredibly comfortable. You can check Amazon's price on the Hugo Derby adjustable cane.

But, if you've had an injury, surgery or have a disability, you'll want to support more of your body weight while you're walking.  Your doctor or physical therapist might recommend a quad cane because it will give you the greatest amount of stability of any cane style. It will easily support more, but not all, of your weight as compared to a single point or standard cane.

Quad canes feature 4 (or 3) tips, with offset handles, to offer more help with balance and support. And quad canes can stand on their own!

The Duro-Med Adjustable Small Base quad cane on Amazon is a great cane for someone who needs a quality quad cane that also  works well on steps. The smaller, rubber-tipped quad base measures 6" x 8",  which is the size you need if you want to climb steps using your quad cane. I know, no one ever tells you that !

(Generally speaking, the bases on large quad canes are too big to fit on the steps.)

Also, I think it's important to mention that this Duro-Med cane on Amazon easily  reverses positions so you can use it on a right or left hand!

And don’t forget, all quad and standard canes have weight capacities. When you shop around, you’ll need to pay attention to match your overall weight within the weight limits of any cane you’re considering.

If you, or your patient, are on the heavier side of the scale, your doctor or PT (physical therapist) might have recommended that you use a bariatric cane. Bariatric canes are specially designed to safely & comfortably support more body weight as you walk. And, thank goodness, there are new designs for bariatric canes that are quite fashionable.

This strong & stylish Drive Medical Heavy Duty Bariatric Cane on Amazon is a great choice for larger men & women who don't  want to skimp on style.  It easily supports up to 500 lbs and the heavy steel tubing folds into four parts for easy & convenient storage.

Quad Cane vs Standard Cane – Important Buying Tips

standard cane

Remember that all canes must be sized for you! It’s critically important to have the right cane height to aid you when you walk. So, I always advise my readers to buy an adjustable quad or standard cane. An adjustable cane allows you to easily customize the cane height, using several release buttons & notches.

If you buy a non-adjustable cane, you’ll have to order the cane customized to your height. Or you’ll have to cut off the end of the cane yourself, in order to customize the height.

Don't forget that many quad canes are made for either the right hand or left hand use! There are some models that can be adjusted for either hand, but there are many models that are only made to be used with one hand.  So, as shop around for a quad cane, keep this in mind, and only buy one that’s suited for your correct hand!
