How to Choose a Bariatric Cane

If you’re tall or big, you need to know how to choose a bariatric cane for your own safety and freedom. All canes are not the same! There are 2 different styles of bariatric canes that are specially designed to provide balance, support and comfort for those of us who are larger.

And you can see my best bariatric quad cane recommendation: the Drive Medical heavy duty quad cane on Amazon. With it's heavy duty construction, it's perfect for seniors up to 500 lbs. It easily adjusts to your height and is styled to look just like many other standard 4 prong canes!

When you’re learning how to choose a bariatric cane, always check the weight ratings. All styles of bariatric canes are rated for weight capacity and you’ll need to match the ratings with your own weight. You’ll see bariatric canes that are rated for 500 to 1,000 lbs. And I want to mention, that if you see a cane that you like, but it doesn’t have a weigh rating, don’t buy it!

Let’s talk about the 2 main styles and how to choose a bariatric cane that’s suited for your own medical conditions:

Straight Bariatric Cane: this is the cane to choose if you just need a little help with your balance while you stand or walk. A straight cane has a single point and the offset handle is the most popular grip on a bariatric cane.

And don’t forget, if you like to travel, or don’t need a cane all the time, a folding bariatric straight cane is a great choice. You can easily fold it up, and tuck it away, when you don’t need it. Very discreet. And when you need it, it quickly snaps back open.

This strong & stylish Drive Medical Heavy Duty Bariatric Cane on Amazon is a great choice for larger men & women who don't  want to skimp on style.  It easily supports up to 500 lbs and the heavy steel tubing folds into four parts for easy & convenient storage.

This Drive Medical folding bariatric cane has a sleek black design and it's brass color gives it an elegant and streamlined look. And you can check Amazon's price on the Drive Medical Heavy Duty bariatric cane on Amazon.

And then there are the quad bariatric canes. Quad canes are a great choice if you need more balance help – and you need a cane to support more of your body weight. Bariatric quad canes have a base with four small legs, which gives you more stability and distributes your weight evenly across the base.

Features to Look for When You're Learning How to Choose a Bariatric Cane

When you’re shopping, I always recommend choosing a height adjustable model. As you probably already know, having your cane at the correct height is essential for safety. A too-tall cane won’t give you the support you need. And a too-short cane can cause you to lean forward and fall.

So choose one that’s easily height adjustable, to your perfect height, using a push button release.

Also, pay special attention to the design and material of the hand grip. Personally, I don’t like the rounded style hand grip because it doesn’t conform to the shape of a hand. I really prefer the offset or derby handle, that’s ergonomically designed.
