Choosing a Walker that’s Right for You

Choosing a walker that’s right for you will help prevent you from falling, getting injured, and give you more independence and mobility. Depending on your current lifestyle & health, you can choose between a standard walker, a rolling walker or a rollator.

And you can see my top recommended standard walker: the Drive Medical Folding Designer Walker on Amazon.

If you need a lot of support and balance assistance, you’ll want to think about getting a standard walker. They’re strong, stable and competitively priced. And standard walkers are great mobility aids if you’re choosing a walker because you can’t support all of your body weight with your legs.

And you can see my #1 top recommended adult walker: the Drive Medical Folding Designer Walker on Amazon. It's lightweight, strong and easily height adjustable from 28.25" to 38.25, so you can set it to your perfect height.

I think this Drive Medical walker is a great walker that has quality features and it's available in stylish colors too: blue, gray and pink!

Walkers have four legs that have non-slip rubber tips. They adjust to your height, using quick-release buttons, and they’re usually made of aluminum, so they’re light and strong.

And if you’re like me, and have a few pounds to lose, you might want to think about getting a standard bariatric walker. Bariatric walkers are designed to safely and comfortably offer support to larger people, with extra bracing - without compromising on style.

My best bariatric walker recommendation is the Medline Bariatric Folding Walker with 5" wheels on Amazon. It's designed with an aluminum frame with a front cross brace and two side braces, for extra strength. This Medline Folding Walker will support up to 500 lbs to keep taller or larger people moving. I love how it easily folds up with the release of two buttons, so it can easily move through narrow halls or doorways.

I highly recommend it and you can check Amazon's price on the Medline Bariatric Folding Walker.

Standard walkers really work best indoors but they can be used outdoors to help get you in and out of your car. And I love the foldable standard walkers because, after you fold it up, they’re so easy to put into your car trunk. Or tuck out of the way.

But, if you you’re more active and can support some weight on your own legs, your doctor may recommend choosing a rolling walker. A rolling walker is built like a standard walker, but has wheels on both front legs, with rubber tips on the back two legs.

I highly recommend this EZ2Care Deluxe Rolling model on Amazon! It has two 5" wheels in the front and two slip-resistant rubber tips on the back legs - and it moves very  smoothly.

It's super easy to fold/unfold and it's made of anodized aluminum for safety and strength - but it's still lightweight. And it adjusts to your own height.

I have this EZ2Care Deluxe Rolling Model from Amazon and I can tell you that the contoured hand grips are very soft and comfortable! Comfortable grips are important for everyone, but especially  for those of use with arthritis, joint pain/stiffness or nerve damage. Like me.

With its two front wheels, you only have to push a rolling walker in front of you, and you’ll be able to move faster, than with a standard walker. Unlike a standard walker, you won’t have to lift it up each time you take a step.

And I want to mention that I really like the smooth plastic ski glides you can put on the back two legs – in place of the rubber tips. Purchased separately, as an accessory when you’re choosing a walker, these glides smoothly move over carpet, thresholds or uneven surfaces. They’re a really useful accessory to buy when you’re choosing a walker.

I highly recommend the Drive Medical Walker Ski Glides on Amazon. They're perfect for giving you smoother and quieter movement over carpet, wood and outdoor surfaces too! Just put them on the rear legs of your walker! And you can check Amazon's price the Drive Medical Walker Ski Glides.

Don’t Forget to Consider Rollators When You’re Choosing a Walker

Rollators allow you to move faster than if you chose a walker or rolling walker, but they have the added safety feature of hand brakes. But remember, rollators will give you the least amount of balance and support. So, if you’re already active, and can support a lot of body weight with your legs, you doctor may want you to use a rollator.

And you can see my #1 all-around rollator walker: the Drive Medical Four Wheel Rollator on Amazon.

There are both three and four wheel rollators available, in many designs and colors. And they’re especially designed for indoor and outdoor use. One thing that many of us love is that most rollators come with fold-up seats! It’s great to have a seat when you need to take a rest.

Now you’re familiar with the models on the market and you’ll feel more confident in choosing a walker.
