Choosing a Quad Cane Size

Choosing a quad cane size is easy if you follow the buying tips I share. It’s important to choose the right size quad cane to give you the best traction and security when you’re walking on floors, carpet, steps - as well as outdoor terrain.

And you can see my top quad cane recommendation: the Duro-Med Quad Cane for men and women available on Amazon.

Quad canes are an important mobility tool designed with four feet, or points, to give you more independence and walking freedom. They also have offset handles that center your weight and help distribute your weight over the shaft of the cane. They give you more support & balance help, as you stand and walk, than a standard, single point cane can offer.

The Duro-Med Adjustable Small Base quad cane on Amazon is a great cane for someone who needs a quality quad cane that also  works well on steps. The smaller, rubber-tipped quad base measures 6" x 8",  which is the size you need if you want to climb steps using your quad cane. I know, no one ever tells you that !

(Generally speaking, the bases on large quad canes are too big to fit on the steps.)

Also, I think it's important to mention that this Duro-Med cane on Amazon easily  reverses positions so you can use it on a right or left hand!

Large Base vs Small Base Quad Canes

You’ll see both large and small base models on the market. You may have questions about exactly which size is right for you, so let’s talk about the advantages of large base vs small base quad canes:

A large base model will offer you more support than a small base will. So, if you doctor tells you that you need the most supportive model, a large base may be the best choice for you. But, the disadvantages of a large base is that it may be too large to fit on your narrow staircase steps – or your hallways may be too narrow. Also, large base quad canes are heavier – so it’s more work to lift them with each step.

Small base models are the lighter and more compact choice when you’re choosing a quad cane size. They’ll safely fit on staircase steps and through narrow hallways. And there’s less effort to lift them as you walk.

And if you, or your loved one, has a bigger frame, a bariatric quad cane is a great choice. They’re designed with stronger materials to give more support assistance to bigger folks.

And you can see my best bariatric quad cane recommendation: the Drive Medical heavy duty quad cane on Amazon. With it's heavy duty construction, it's perfect for seniors up to 500 lbs. It easily adjusts to your height and is styled to look just like many other standard 4 prong canes!

Remember to Think About Your Left or Right Hand When Choosing a Quad Cane Size:

In addition to choosing a quad cane size, you also need to think about which hand you will use to hold your cane. Quad canes are unique because they can be purchased for either your right or left hand. And, lately, there are some models available that can be adjusted so that you can use them with either hand. So, always double check any model you’re thinking about purchasing to make sure it will work with your correct hand.
