Your doctor or physical therapist may recommend a steerable knee scooter or knee walker if you’re recovering from an injury, or you’ve just had surgery, on your foot, lower leg or ankle. The best steerable knee scooter will give you independence and stability. You’ll be able to easily maneuver wherever you want, without falling, while also safely resting your knee/leg.

When I compare quality, portability, features and price, I highly recommend the Steerable Knee Scooter by KneeRover on Amazon.  It has 4 non-marking 10" pneumatic wheels for excellent stability on both indoor and outdoor surfaces. Check Amazon's price on the Steerable Knee Scooter.

The Steerable Knee Scooter fits either right or left legs, has a deep 3.5" contoured knee resting platform that's height adjustable, 300 lb weight capacity and it has a stylish green color!   And the KneeRover has an adjustable locking handbrake for safe control.

Knee Scooter vs Crutches

Knee scooter vs crutches – what are the advantages? Let’s talk about why knee scooters can be the best crutch alternatives to give you your mobility, more safety and better recovery.

Not too long ago, crutches were routinely handed out after you broke your foot or ankle – or after you had surgery. Thankfully, the newly designed steerable knee scooters are much better and easier than using crutches!

The best steerable knee scooter frees up your hand from crutches and gives you a chance to exercise your good leg. And instead of hanging your injured foot or leg between awkward crutches, you can comfortably rest it on the knee scooter pad. You won’t put any weight on your injured area.

Another reason scooters win, in the knee scooter vs crutches debate, is that scooter wheels move more securely over all types of floors or uneven terrain – but a crutch leg can get caught on something and make you fall. You don’t want to use crutches and take the chance of falling - this is an important reason knee walkers are great crutch alternatives.

And quite frankly, the best knee walkers are just more comfortable and fun to use. You won’t get sore under your arms, like you would with crutches. And the new colors and designs for steerable knee walkers make them the stylish crutch alternative choice when you’re considering a knee scooter vs crutches.

Features to Look for in the Best Steerable Knee Scooter

Make sure any steerable knee walker you’re considering has a secure handbrake that can be locked, with rear disc brakes. The brakes on a steerable knee scooter look similar to the hand brakes on a standard bike. And a locking feature on the handbrakes is important so you can safely “park” your scooter – and get on and off.

You’ll also want to check the maximum weight limit! All knee scooters have a maximum weight limit that you should not exceed. Non-bariatric models can usually support 275 – 300 lbs, but this varies with every model. Make sure your own weight does not exceed, or come very close, to the maximum weight limit of any knee walker you’re considering. If it does, you need to chose a heavy duty knee scooter.

You can see my #1 heavy duty knee scooter recommendation that's also in a snazzy blue color: the All Terrain KneeRover Steerable Knee Scooter on Amazon.

And don’t forget to make sure that the best steerable knee walker that you choose can be adjusted to be compatible for both right and left legs.

I always recommend buying a knee scooter that has non-marking rubber wheels, which are designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The last thing you want to do is leave nasty tire marks on the floors in your house.

If you have knee scooter size questions, you can always take a look at the KneeRover product size guide.

Being able to fold up your knee walker is a must! It’s so important to be able to fold it up and tuck it away in a car or trunk. Or put it away, in a small area, if you’re not using it.

And last, but not least, don’t forget that having a basket is incredibly handy! With a basket, you can take things along with you – and keep your hands safely on the handle bars.

If you’re scheduled for, or recovering from knee or leg surgery, you really should consider looking for the best knee scooter available. These new knee scooters will elevate your leg and still allow you to remain active. And independent!
