Best Knee Walker Scooter Buying Guide

Should you rent, buy or get a used knee scooter?

Wondering if you should rent, buy a new knee scooter, or just get a used knee walker? You've landed at the right page & I'll show you how to decide:

And you can see my #1 knee scooter recommendation: the Steerable Knee Scooter by KneeRover on Amazon.

When I started to rent a knee scooter, I was quoted $35 to $40 a week - with a 4 week minimum rental commitment. Basically, it would cost me $140 to $160/month for a standard knee walker rental model.

That sounded ok, until I started comparing the prices of some of the newer generation knee scooters that are available online. And I saw that some of the nicer, new knee walker scooters would cost me the same or less! Wow.

And I feel in love with this economical and stylish Steerable Knee Scooter by KneeRover on Amazon.

It has the cushioned platform that's so important, indoor/outdoor wheels, handle bar brakes and a really helpful removable basket. And I love the racing green color.

What about a used knee scooter or used knee walker?

And when I was first doing my research to find the best knee walker scooter, I briefly thought about looking for a used knee scooter - which is the same thing as a used knee walker.

And you can see my best steerable knee scooter recommendation: the Steerable Knee Scooter by KneeRover on Amazon.

As I was looking around at used knee scooters, I started to learn that there are some important features that you need to look for - and compare - in order to make sure any used knee scooter is a good size or fit for your body.

You need to make sure that any used knee scooter knee platform and handle bars are easily height adjustable to correspond with your existing height measurements. Then you need to make sure that the knee platform will adjust to either your right or left leg - because not all used knee scooters will adjust to either side. And you need to make sure the brakes are in good working order.  And, of course, for me, I had to know that any used knee scooter or used knee walker would come from a non-smoking home!

I quickly got tired of trying to save just a few bucks with a used knee scooter - I really wanted the convenience, safety and WARRANTY of a new knee walker scooter!

I highly recommend the All Terrain Knee Scooter by KneeRover on Amazon for several important reasons: it features 12" pneumatic tires, adjustable locking rear brakes with fully adjustable knee platform and height adjustable handle bars. It's specially designed to safely scoot around your home or over grass, gravel, gaps in sidewalks & other outdoor surfaces.

The All Terrain Knee Scooter by KneeRover also has a generous 400lb weight capacity and is styled in a snazzy blue color. And I love the built-in basket!

Knee Walker Reviews and Advice

Here are my handy knee walker reviews and comparison tips to help you choose the best knee walker scooter:

When you’re comparing knee walkers, first check the overall weight, whether it’s foldable and whether it’s designed to be used indoors and outdoors. Remember, you’ll have to push, and sometimes lift, your knee walker, so I always advise my readers to choose a rolling knee walker that’s under 30 lbs. And make sure it’s foldable so you can easily put in in your car trunk or back seat.

When I compare quality, portability, features and price, I highly recommend the Steerable Knee Scooter by KneeRover on Amazon.  It has 4 non-marking 10" pneumatic wheels for excellent stability on both indoor and outdoor surfaces. Check Amazon's price on the Steerable Knee Scooter.

The Steerable Knee Scooter fits either right or left legs, has a deep 3.5" contoured knee resting platform that's height adjustable, 300 lb weight capacity and it has a stylish green color!   And the KneeRover has an adjustable locking handbrake for safe control.

Because it only weighs 22lbs, and folds up, it's extremely portable and you can take it anywhere you need.  And I love that it has a tool-free assembly and set-up! And you can check Amazon's price on the Steerable Knee Scooter by Knee Rover.

It’s important to know that not all knee scooters are designed with tires that can be used outdoors, which I think is too limiting. Generally speaking, models with 5” tires really should only be used indoors, but knee walker scooters with 10” – 12” tires really work great on sidewalks, gravel, grass, uneven ground, etc.  I highly recommend choosing a knee walker scooter with larger wheels that can be used both outdoors and indoors.

Next, when you’re reading knee walker reviews, you want to make sure that your rolling knee walker is adjustable for both the left and right leg, so it can be customized for your specific injury or surgical area. Some knee walkers do not adjust for both legs – so double-check this before you buy.

Then check the steering mechanisms and the braking system. I like the rolling knee walkers that have the advanced automotive style tie-rod steering mechanisms because they steer better & smoother. And I always recommend choosing a knee walker scooter that has an adjustable locking handbrake. You’ll want to be able to lock your brakes when you’re resting, or getting in and out of your rolling knee scooter.

Do I need a knee walker basket or knee scooter pads?

Yes! I think everyone needs a knee walker basket so they can easily carry groceries, a bag, purse, books, etc!  And, let’s face it, they look so cute too – while they’re extremely functional. Knee walker baskets are usually mounted on front of the knee walker. I wouldn’t use a knee walker without a basket.

And I wanted to mention that a lot of my readers like putting knee scooter pads on the seat. A knee scooter pad is a fluffy, machine washable soft sheepskin-like covering that goes over your knee walker seat. Knee scooter pads improve the cushioning and comfort of your seat and reduces any chafing.

What about a used knee scooter?

Who Needs the best Knee Walker Scooter?

If you have an injury to your ankle, foot, knee or leg, a knee walker is an excellent choice for you. And, also, if you’re recovering from any type of surgery on your leg, knee, foot or ankle, a knee walker scooter is a much better choice than old-school crutches.

You see, a knee walker scooter frees up your hand from holding on to your crutches. And you won’t have sore armpits from hopping along with crutches.

And one of the things that we all love best about a rolling knee walker is that you still get to exercise your good leg. As you push along, using your good leg, you’re getting exercise and helping your body heal.

How to Use a Knee Walker

choosing a knee walker is important

When you’re learning how to use a knee walker, always remember that you’ll need to propel yourself forward using your good leg. So start off with small pushes using your good leg. When you’re first discovering how to use a knee walker, you’ll need to judge how hard you need to push, to travel at a safe speed – so begin with small pushes.

In between your pushes, test your handbrakes. You want to get a good sense of the tension and reflex of the braking system on your rolling knee walker.

And don’t forget – most falls using knee walkers happen during turns. Take it easy on turns, and don’t take turns too fast. Or too sharply. Slowly turn and be ready to put on the brakes if you need it.

Take it easy when you’re first learning how to use a knee walker and you’ll build up confidence and speed.
